Acer shirasawanum Red Dawn is a new red leaf cultivar from Buchholz Nursery. Shirasawanum maples are known as Full Moon Maples can be identified by looking at the flowers and subsequent seed pods [samaras]. If they point up rather than hang down then it is a shirasawanum – palmatum samaras hang down. This is a red leaf shirasawanum maple which used to be unusual because most of the full moon maples are lighter colors of green and gold.  In April the leaves of Red Dawn are red and beautiful, but the maple was named for its crimson fall color, which is electric crimson red.

Red Dawn in the same genus as Autumn Moon, Aureum,  Jordan, Kawaii and Moonrise. Shirasawanum refers to Full Moon maples of which in my inventory are the five mentioned above plus Johin, and Mikado.

Acer shirasawanum Red Dawn has a lovely shape and growth habit not too big and more like a tree with an open structure. Height in 10 years 9′ with a 4′ spread. This cultivar can handle full sun to partial shade, but all day sun is recommended to keep the red color in the leaves. When red leaf maples do not get enough sun the leaves begin to green-out. It is a strong growing maple perfectly suited for cold winters, as well as a small sunny garden. Once established hardy to -20 degrees, USDA zone 5.

If you love Japanese Maples as much as I do, you can learn more about these amazing trees by joining the Facebook  Group – Japanese Maples and Conifers. It is free to join – you just have to be a Facebook member. The contributors to the group have a wealth of experience and post many photos.

The first photo shows summer color – the next is spring color and finally fall color. Discovered by Talon at Buchholz Nursery for his Flora Wonde™  Collection.
