Acer palmatum Fireglow is a wonderful red leaf maple with a medium size palmatum leaf and a lovely structure that can grow to 9-10′ in 10 years. The spring leaves are bright pink/red and they hold their color of red through the summer more so than red leaf cultivars that often look more burgundy in the summer. Fall color is scarlet red. Nearly every spring I notice its abundance of flowers that always seems to produce a lot of samaras [seed pods] which adds to the overall look of this beautiful maple.
Fireglow is a long-time favorite for sunny locations because it is a slow to moderate growing maple with good color and it doesn’t get too big for a small garden. Plus the fall color is crimson red. Once established this Japanese Maple is hardy to -20 degrees – USDA Zone 5.
Fireglow is truly a special red palmatum maple and very easy to grow. Just follow my Planting Instructions. As with most Japanese Maples some pruning during the first few years will help you reach the shape you want. For more see Pruning Japanese Maples.
This photo shows the Fireglow planted in our display garden with fall color. The second photo was taken from behind the maple looking towards the sun – a real fire glow!
