Acer palmatum Fireglow planted in our display garden – glowing red in the fall.

SKU: N/A Category:

Acer palmatum Fireglow is a medium size upright red leaf maple.  The spring leaves are bright pink-red and remain red in color through the summer more so than many other similar cultivars which darken to a burgundy color.  Fall color is fantastic scarlet red.  The Fireglow in my display garden has an abundance of flowers each spring that produce a multitude of seeds – called ‘samaras’.  The samaras hang down as little ornaments which adds to the overall look of this beautiful maple.

Acer palmatum Fireglow is a long-time favorite for sunny locations because it is a slow to moderate growing maple with good color and it doesn’t get too big. Estimated height is 9-10′ in 10 years. Once established Fireglow is hardy to -20 degrees – USDA Zone 5.

Acer palmatum Fireglow is truly a special red maple and very easy to grow. Just follow my Planting Instructions.  As with most Japanese Maples some pruning during the first few years will help you reach the shape you want.  For more information please see Pruning Japanese Maples.

If you love Japanese Maples as much as I do, you can learn more about these amazing trees by joining the Facebook  Group – Japanese Maples and Conifers. It is free to join – you just have to be a Facebook member and the contributors to the group have a wealth of experience and lots of photos.

I also recommend  that you purchase the 4th edition of Japanese Maples, by J.D. Vertrees and Peter Gregory. This book is full of photos and descriptions of more than 400 cultivars.

The first photo shows the Fireglow planted in my display garden with fall color – it really does glow! The second photo was shot from behind the same maple. The third photo is from a maple friend in the United Kingdom, Rosemary Duckett, showing summer color.
