SKU: N/A Category:

Acer palmatum Beni schichihenge is a variegated upright cultivar with pink and cream color on green leaves. Throughout the spring and summer the ratio of pink and cream changes. So at any one time the dominance of color makes the maple appear more cream colored or more pink in color. Fall color is pink to crimson. This maple displays changing leaf color from spring through fall and it is a great focal point for a garden.

Acer palmatum Beni schichihenge is similar to Shojo no mai which also has green leaves that are variegated with pink and cream; however Beni is a little taller and grows faster than the Shojo.  Both Beni and Shojo grow in the classic ‘V’ shape which is an elegant branching structure. Generally, the branching is more open which allows the wind to blow through. As an added bonus both of these variegated maples can handle mostly sun. However, late afternoon shade is preferred between 4:00 and 8:00 pm in the summer for the hottest climate zones.

Acer palmatum Beni schichihenge is a medium sized maple with a moderate growth rate that may reach 10′ in 10 years.  Some pruning is needed for all Japanese Maples to keep them looking their best. Long limbs that extend 3-4′ beyond the outline of the remaining branches should be pruned to keep the maple in balance. Lower branches may be removed to allow for under-planting or ease in mowing around the tree. Annual removal of dead limbs is recommended. For more information please see Pruning Japanese Maples. Once established this cultivar is hardy to -20 degrees – USDA Zone 5.    For information on the proper way to care for your maples, please see Care and Maintenance of Japanese Maples.
