A delightful small tree becomes a maple for all seasons - with pink-flushed light yellow-green leaves in the spring becoming light to mid green for the summer, then turning a very bright yellow, often reddish tinged in the fall. The pink-flushed yellow shoots become an eye-catching orange to apricot-yellow for the winter. The various hues of yellow color hold well through the winter. In Japanese the name means 'beautiful mountain range'. Estimated height in 10 years is 6' with a width of the same size.

The first photo shows Ariadne when grown in partial shade. The second photo shows new spring growth with morning sun and afternoon shade and the last the change to fall color. The second photo is courtesy of Talon Buchholz.
One of my new favorites [Sam]. This cultivar is highly desired for a smaller partial shade garden. Placement in either a Northern or Eastern location would be best. A moderately fast growing maple may reach 8' high and 6' wide wide in 6 years. The leaves are reticulated with colors of rose pink, yellow and light green. Reticulation is a term used to describe the veins that are visible on a leaf.
Developed in the Netherlands, 'Ariadne' is the name of the nurseryman's grand daughter. The photo shows the wonderful color variations of this unique maple. A collector's must. Once established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 6.

First photo shows wonderful string-like leaves during the summer. Second photo is a Beni otake in our display garden which shows the beginning of fall color - crimson red.
Beni otake is a medium sized red maple in the Linearilobum Group. The name in Japanese is 'Big Red Bamboo.' This fast-growing upright tree has purple-red leaves and a growth habit that some suggest looks like bamboo.
The deep purple-red foliage is outstanding in the spring. Summer may show some fading, but this only enhances the overall appearance of bamboo like leaves adorned by red seed pods - called Samaras on Japanese maples. Fall color is crimson red with reddish colored bark that is especially attractive during the winter months. This cultivar grows to around 12' in 10 years. Eventually, Beni otake may reach 12' at full maturity. The growth habit is tall and narrow making Beni otake a wonderful addition to a smaller garden area. Once established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 5.

First photo shows the unusual red summer color. The second photo shows fall color courtesy of Talon Buchholz. The third photo shows a 3 gallon 'Beni shi en' in the fall with its pumpkin orange color.
This variegated cultivar name in Japanese means 'Red Smoke'. This rare and hard to find maple provides several color changes throughout the spring, summer and fall. New spring growth is feathery looking with a rosy-red color that changes to a red purple - the smoke color in the summer. In the fall, the pumpkin orange color evolves to scarlet red. This fantastic fall color display lasts longer than most maples - usually 2-3 weeks, if mother nature cooperates and freezing cold wind is not an issue.
'Beni shi en' has a moderate growth habit to form a small upright tree. In 5 years the tree may reach 7'. This dwarf maple makes a wonderful specimen for a small garden because of its changing seasonal color display. 'Beni shi en' is a good selection for either bonsai, a patio container or a focal point in a small garden. Once established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 5. palmatum 'Beni ubi gohan'
'Beni ubi gohan' is a cute red dwarf only reaching 6' tall at maturity. The name in Japanese means "five long red fingers' and it is in the linearilobum group of maples, which means the leaves are thin, string-like and dense. The overall growth habit is tight and compact which makes for an excellent choice in a small garden or a patio container. New growth is light bronze-red turning to dark red for the summer. The dark red color holds up well during hot summer months. In the fall the color becomes a beautiful scarlet red. 'Beni ubi gohan' is a moderate grower and is sought after by bonsai enthusiasts when the graft is low.
Once established hardy to USDA Zone 5.

Photo shows fall color.
Discovered by Richard P. Wolff of Red Maple Nursery in Pennsylvania. Similar to Bloodgood, but better growth rate and leaf color retention. Plant in full sun or in partial shade; however the more sun the tree receives the better the red-burgundy summer color. Emperor I is a relatively fast growing cultivar with a tight shape that makes it excellent for a shade tree in a backyard. Emperor I turns a brilliant scarlet red in the fall. Once established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 5.
This cultivar rapidly grows to 15' in 10 years.
Eventually, Emperor I may reach 20' at full maturity.

The first photo shows the Fireglow in our display garden with fall color. The second photo is courtesy of Talon Buchholz.
Acer palmatum Fireglow was developed and propagated by Fratelli Gilardelli Nursery near Milan Italy. The leaves are similar to Bloodgood and Emperor in size, but the height of the tree is around 10' tall compared to 15' - 20' feet for the other two. Both Emperor I and Bloodgood have a deep burgundy color in the summer - Fireglow has more of a true red color and not burgundy. In the spring, the new leaves emerge pinkish red turning to darker red in the summer and finishing with a spectacular scarlet glow. A moderate growth habit - Fireglow is excellent for a medium sized specimen in the garden.
Once established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 5.

Geisha, as a cultivar has been around for a number of years and is listed in J.D. Vertrees book Japanese Maples, 2nd edition. Initially from New Zealand and imported by Talon Buchholz of Gaston, OR. This cultivar is a wonderful pink from spring through summer turning scarlet in the fall. Ideal sunlight would be morning through mid-afternoon with some shade protection during the hottest part of the day.
Geisha is a slow growing cultivar and often grafted high for a
better display of color. One of the signature variegations for "Geisha" is a
dark green contorted spot on a leaf and sometimes the whole leaf is
contorted. Collector's only please as Geisha is very

Acer palmatum 'Geisha Gone Wild'
First photo is courtesy of Talon Buchholz and the second photo shows the leaves of the Geisha Gone Wild in our display garden.
Geisha was the original cultivar and has been around for a number of years and is listed in J.D. Vertrees book Japanese Maples, 2nd edition. Initially from New Zealand and imported by Talon Buchholz of Gaston, OR. A seedling from Geisha flourished and was propagated by Talon and named 'Geisha Gone Wild'. Nearly identical to another seedling developed and propagated in New Zealand named 'Shiraz'.
This cultivar, though similar to Geisha in color, it is more tolerant of growing conditions and is a faster more vigorous growing maple. Again, in very limited supply. Once established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 6. A collector's must.

Acer
palmatum 'Koto no ito' - The first photo shows summer green string-like leaves. The second photo shows
the fantastic fall color. A small tree with a lot of character.
Koto no ito in Japanese means 'Harp
Strings.' It is also nicknamed the
'Dancing Monkey Tree' because the leaves
hang down and whip around when the wind
blows. Another great
characteristic is the change in leaf
structure as the tree matures. The newest
leaves emerge fatter compared to the
leaves on lower branches. Each year the leaf
shape gets skinnier from the same leaf node.
Over time the oldest leaves are mere strings
compared to those leaves emerging from new
leaf nodes. As the tree ages, subsequent leaves
become thinner, more linearilobum in nature.
'Koto no ito' can handle full sun to partial
shade. Considered a dwarf - Koto no ito grows to
around 6' tall and 4' wide in 6 years. The
growth habit is like a 'vase or V-shape'.
The lovely green summer leaves evolve from
gold to orange to scarlet in the fall. This
small green maple is ideal for a small
garden or patio container. Once
established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 5.

First photo shows the unique summer color courtesy of Talon Buchholz. The second photo shows the beginning of the change to fall color - quite unique. The third photo is a 2 gallon from 2012 Inventory.
A relatively new cultivar - maple enthusiasts are discovering this rare and hard to find maple - 'Manyo no sato', a variegated cultivar similar to 'Beni shi en' only with more lime green on the purple-brown base color. In Japanese the name means "the wonderful place of nature". This cultivar can handle full sun to partial shade and has a dense, shrub-like growth habit. The ideal growing conditions would provide for sun nearly all day long, except during hot afternoon temperatures when some shade is preferred. The sun brings out the purple and lime green leaves which make this maple awesome. Fall color varies from orange to scarlet.

The first photo is courtesy of Talon Buchholz. The second and third photos show Mikazuki in our display garden.
One of my new favorites [Sam] - Mikazuki is a relatively new cultivar developed and propagated by Talon Buchholz in Gaston, OR. The name in Japanese means 'crescent moon' which reflects the way the leaves are shaped. Spring color is bright pink fading to a lighter pink in the summer with a bronze overtone. Fall color is brilliant hot pink to crimson. This maple shows moderate growth and has a very nice shape. Height and width in 10 years would be 8' x 4'.
Mikazuki is still relatively unknown in most maple nurseries, but once you see it - especially in the spring you have to have one. At least that is what we did. A collector's must. Once established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 6.

Acer palmatum 'Mikawa yatsubusa'
The first photo shows the summer green of this outstanding dwarf maple in our display garden. The second photo shows the great fall color.
One of the most outstanding dwarf maples - 'Mikawa yatsubusa' displays yellow-green foliage in the spring turning to a vivid forest green. As the leaves emerge they overlap each other and form tight bunches. One of the special characteristics of this maple is the tight leaf clumps on branches that seem to layer to form a natural bonsai shape. The best display of this cultivar is pruning that removes some of the individual leaves on the trunk to open up the shape and focus on the remaining tight clumps of leaves. 'Mikawa yatsubusa' may reach 6' high and wide in 10 years. A great pick for bonsai or larger containers.
This distinctive cultivar would make the perfect focal point in a small Japanese style garden or near a koi pond. Fall color occurs late and sometimes winter temperatures and wind prevent the change in color - orange to red.
Due to the natural bonsai shape, underneath plantings of ground cover and use of rocks can easily make a single maple transform into a small Japanese garden. Relatively easy to grow, even a beginner maple collector could not go wrong with this choice. Once established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 5. A collector's must. [Please note: the 1 gallon Mikawa yatsubusa maples are still quite small]

The first photo shows Orange Dream when grown in the shade. The second photo shows spring color courtesy of Talon Buchholz.
Orange Dream was introduced in the 1980s by a nursery in Milan Italy. The new growth of this cultivar varies from wonderful orange-red to orange-yellow. Summer growth shows the lemon-yellow color with orange traces on the edges. Late summer the leaves are more of a yellow-green turning to yellow gold, orange and crimson in the fall. This maple provides 6 months of outstanding color from April through October - if you have room for only one maple, with the right sun conditions, this one should be a contender.
Orange Dream is a strong growing palmatum type maple that can reach 15 feet in 10 years. The light yellow and orange coloration requires some shade from the hot afternoon sun to prevent burning on the leaves. One of our favorites. Another collector's choice for maple enthusiasts. The first photo shows the stark contrast between First Ghost and Purple Ghost. The second photo is from our display garden [golf cart in the background] shows the change to fall color - purple red.
Purple Ghost is another in the Ghost series developed by Talon Buchholz with Buchholz and Buchholz Nursery in Gaston, Oregon.
A medium sized tree, the new growth ranges from lavender to dark purple depending upon the sun or shade location. With more sun the leaf color is deep purple changing to a greenish purple hue in the summer. The reticulated leaves often appear ruffled. The term reticulated relates to the visibility of the veins in the leaves. The dark purple color of the leaves in the spring fades to a lighter green color which highlights the secondary late summer growth - again deep purple. In the fall the leaves turn to a brilliant purple red.
Purple Ghost is a relatively fast growing maple with a growth habit more like a tree than a bush. Height in 10 years is 12' and 6' wide. Once established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 5. A collector's must.

First photo was taken June 2010 of a 3 gallon 'Ruby Stars' in our greenhouse. The second photo is courtesy of Talon Buchholz. The third photo shows the beginning of the change to gold fall color in a group of 1 gallon containers.
Ruby Stars, another of my favorites, is considered a dwarf Japanese maple only reaching about 6' at maturity, but please remember this is a slow growing dwarf. It may take 10 years to reach 5'. This small variegated red leaf cultivar has the new growth that is truly ruby red and actually looks like a star. As the leaves age they become more green which provides a great background for the secondary flush of new ruby star leaves that catches everyone's eye.
Ruby Stars should be pruned for shape and develops into more of a shrub than a tree. Ruby Stars can handle the full hot sun and is perfect for a patio container. The small leaves are attractive to bonsai enthusiasts. Once established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 6.

palmatum 'Shigitatsu sawa' The first photo is a close up of the
whitish green reticulated leaves. The second
photo shows fall color - yellow gold. A very old Japanese cultivar dating back
to the 1600's. In J.D. Vertrees book
Japanese Maples, he describes this small
tree as a variegated cultivar. As described in the book
variegation is found in the new growth with
interspaces of yellow on the light green
leaves. We believe 'Shigitatsu sawa' is best
grown in shade or indirect sunlight that can
be found on the North side of many homes or
in a patio container on a shaded deck. In
the right growing conditions the new leaves
seem almost opaque and more white than
green. The reticulated leaves are quite
prominent with dark green veins showing through both in spring and
throughout the summer. Shigitatsu sawa is a slow grower and
forms a small tree with a height of 5' in 10

Acer palmatum
The first photo shows the beautiful green summer color. The second photo shows the beginning of the change to fall color - orange red.
Shishigashira is an older cultivar in the palmatum category. A medium sized tree with a most unusual characteristic--the leaves are small and crinkled around upright branches. In Japanese the name translates to Lion's Head' or Lion's Mane based upon a mythical lion in Japanese drama because of its shape and growth habit. Bunched up, heavily curled leaves grow at the end of short stout shoots.
The foliage is deep green and firm to the touch. The tree is stout and does not wave in the wind, as with most maples. This maple loves full sun and does not burn. Shishigashira is considered a slow growing tree suitable for bonsai enthusiasts. However, over fertilization may lead to rapid growth and an overall leggy look which is not desirable. Shishigashira like other Japanese maples benefits from some pruning to shape the tree, as well as removing any dead branches. We've pruned to keep our Shishigashira in our display garden around 6' tall and wide.
The dark green foliage turns to gold and finally scarlet red in the fall. The estimated height in 10 years is 12'. Shishigashira like other Japanese maples benefits from pruning to shape the tree. Once established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 5.

Another Sam favorite. This exceptional maple is truly unique with a feathery green-white appearance. A small to medium sized tree with showy reticulated leaves. The term reticulated relates to the visibility of the veins in the leaves. The yellow-white toned leaves show a deep cut almost lacey look. As with other variegated maples morning sun and afternoon shade is preferred. This ghost maple really is really more impressive than our online photo which shows the beginning of fall color. However, when Sister Ghost receives more sunlight the fall color is yellow-gold. A very nice addition to the ghost maple series.

New leaves unfold that are pale yellow/green with a red/purple border around each leaf. During the summer the leaves change to darker greens, reds and gold. Fall colors range from light red to dark scarlet. Tsuma gaki is not a large growing maple. In 10 years the tree may reach 7 to 8 feet tall. Some staking may be required as the weight of the leaves on new branches creates a pendulous habit and without support the shape will be short and wide.
Tsuma gaki is a striking looking maple that is easy to grow and therefore, a good choice for a individual experimenting in growing JMs for the first time. Villa Taranto is the red and cream
variegated version of Koto no ito. It grows
