   Acer palmatum 'Bihou'

A delightful small tree is a maple for all seasons - with pink-flushed light yellow-green leaves in the spring becoming light to mid green for the summer, then turning a very bright yellow, often reddish tinged in the fall.  The pink-flushed orange-brown shoots become an eye-catching orange to apricot-yellow for the winter. This yellow color holds well through the winter. In Japanese the name means 'beautiful mountain range'.  Estimated height in 10 years is 6' with a width of the same size.

           Acer palmatum 'Amber Ghost'

Amber Ghost is another new cultivar in the Ghost Series developed by Talon Buchholz with Buchholz and Buchholz Nursery in Gaston, Oregon. The photo is courtesy of Talon. A distinguishing feature of Amber Ghost is the bright purple color of new bark.

A small to medium sized tree with variegated reticulated leaves. The term reticulated relates to the visibility of the veins in the leaves. The leaves vary from amber to greenish lavender to a darker purple red tone. Often the leaves are tinged with different colors of purple hues around the edges which provides the unusual look that is distinctive in the Ghost Series. As with other variegated maples,  some shade in hot afternoon sun is preferred. Fall colors range from gold to orange. A collector's must.

This cultivar is highly desired for a smaller partial shade garden. Placement in either a Northern or Eastern location would be best. A moderately growing maple may reach 8' high and nearly as wide. The photo shows the wonderful color variations of this Ghost Maple. One of our favorites. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.

      Acer palmatum 'Fireglow'

The photo shown is a Fireglow with fall color grown in our display garden.

Developed and propagated by Fratelli Gilardelli Nursery near Milan Italy. Similar to Bloodgood and Emperor, but not the leaves are not as deeply divided and the summer color is more red than burgundy. Though a vigorous upright grower, this maple will not reach the height and spread of Bloodgood. In the spring the new leaves emerge with a very bright pink red color. Even in the hottest summer climates, Fireglow holds it red color without burning.  Although vigorous in  its growth pattern, this tree is still a good choice for patio containers.

This cultivar rapidly grows to 10' in 10 years. Eventually, Fireglow may reach 10 to 12' at full maturity. Good selection for a medium sized specimen in the garden. Fall color is scarlet red. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.

             Acer palmatum 'Kasigi yama'

Kasigi yama is a wonderful maple for a sunny location.  The primary color is brick red, but this color varies with the age of the leaf and the amount of sun or shade the plant receives. The color is very distinctive from other red cultivars. The reticulated leaves have veins that are dark red to almost black in the center while the side veins vary in color.  Summer color tones are bold from purple to brick-red with green hues on the underside of the leaf.  Then in late summer another flush of new growth shows more purple and red tones with finally a fantastic red-purple finish in fall. Recommended sun exposure is mostly sun.

This variety can take hot afternoon sun with adequate moisture. Estimated height in 10 years is 10' tall and just as wide without pruning. Maximum height is 20'. Needs pruning for shape. Photo courtesy of Talon Buchholz.

     Acer palmatum 'Kinran'

Kinran is a red leaf cultivar with leaves that are deeply divided. Spring and early summer coloration is a deep rich bronze red. The reticulated vein is bright green and very noticeable. In late summer the leaves change to a deep green shaded with dark red. Fall color develops into a beautiful gold with overtones of scarlet for which it is named. Kinran in Japanese means 'woven with golden strings'.

This is a medium size maple that will be 6' in 10 years and mature at around 9' high and wide. This is an unusual cultivar not widely known. Acer palmatum 'Koto no ito'  - The first photo shows summer green string-like leaves. The second photo shows the fantastic fall color.

A small tree with a lot of character. Koto no ito in Japanese means 'Harp Strings.'  It is also called  the 'Dancing Monkey Tree' because the leaves hang down and whip around when the wind blows through it. Another great characteristic is the change is leaf structure as the tree matures. The newest growth each spring are large compared to the leaves on lower branches. As the tree ages, subsequent leaves become thinner, more linearilobum in nature.

This small green tree in summer turns a splendid gold, orange to red in the fall. Koto no ito grows in the common 'vase' shape and may reach 6' in ten years. A nice specimen for a small garden. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.

Acer palmatum 'Mikawa yatsubusa'

The first photo shows the summer green of this outstanding dwarf maple. The second photo shows the great fall color.

One of the most outstanding dwarf maples. Mikawa yatsubusa displays yellow-green foliage in the spring, however, soon the leaves become a vivid forest green. As the leaves emerge they overlap each other and form tight bunches. One of the special characteristics of this plant is the tight leaf clumps on branches that seem to layer to form a natural bonsai shape.  The best display of this cultivar is pruning that removes some of the individual leaves on the trunk to emphasize the tight clumps of leaves. May reach 5' high and wide in 10 years. A great pick for Bonsai or larger containers. Fall color is orange to red. Collector's choice. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.

Rare and unusual, this hard to find variegated tree will be the envy of those visiting your garden. The foliage is beautiful and requires semi-shade for the best effect. Acer palmatum 'Shigitatsu sawa'

The first photo is a close up of the whitish green reticulated leaves. The second photo shows fall color - yellow gold.

A very old Japanese cultivar dating back to the 1600's. In J.D. Vertrees book Japanese Maples, he describes this small tree as a variegated cultivar. As described in the book variegation is found in the new growth with interspaces of yellow on the light green leaves. We believe 'Shigitatsu sawa' is best grown in shade or indirect sunlight that can be found on the North side of many homes or in a patio container on a shaded deck. In the right growing conditions the new leaves seem almost opaque and more white than green. The reticulated leaves are quite prominent with dark green veins showing through both in spring and throughout the summer.

Shigitatsu sawa is a slow grower and forms a small tree with a height of 5' in 10 years. Fall colors range from yellow to gold. This maple makes a wonderful specimen for a small garden with its changing seasonal interest. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.

Acer palmatum 'Shishigashira'

The first photo shows the beautiful green summer color. The second photo shows the beginning of the change to fall color - orange red.

Shishigashira is an older cultivar in the palmatum category. A medium sized tree with a most unusual characteristic--the leaves are small and crinkled around upright branches. In Japanese the name translates to Lion's Head' or Lion's Mane based upon a mythical lion in Japanese drama because of its shape and growth habit. Bunched up, heavily curled leaves grow at the end of short stout shoots.

The foliage is deep green and firm to the touch. The tree is stout and does not wave in the wind, as with most maples. This maple loves full sun and does not burn. Shishigashira is considered a slow growing tree suitable for bonsai enthusiasts. However, over fertilization may lead to rapid growth and an overall leggy look which is not desirable.

The dark green foliage turns to gold and finally scarlet red in the fall. The estimated height in 10 years is 12'. Shishigashira like other Japanese maples benefits from pruning to shape the tree. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.

Acer palmatum 'Sister Ghost'

First photo shows Sister Ghost in our display garden with very limited sunlight. The second photo shows summer color courtesy of Talon Buchholz.

Another Sam favorite. This exceptional maple is truly unique with a feathery green-white appearance. This ghost maple really is really more impressive than our online photo which shows the beginning of fall color. However, when Sister Ghost receives more sunlight the fall color is yellow-gold. A very nice addition to the ghost maple series.

Sister Ghost is another new cultivar in the Ghost Series developed by Talon Buchholz owner of Buchholz and Buchholz Nursery in Gaston, Oregon.

A small to medium sized tree with showy reticulated leaves. The term reticulated relates to the visibility of the veins in the leaves. The yellow-white toned leaves show a deep cut almost lacey look.  As with other variegated maples,  some shade in hot afternoon sun is preferred. Fall colors range from gold to orange.    Acer palmatum 'Tiger Rose'

One of our favorite cultivars. Part of our display garden - the first photo shows the beginning of fall color - gold to orange to crimson. The second photo shows the delicate variegated leaves in spring and summer.

Tiger Rose was found by Dr. Bump of Forest Grove, Oregon and named after his wife Rose. Tiger Rose is a very special maple for a smaller garden or space. Slow growing and very graceful, Tiger Rose, is uniquely variegated and highly desired by maple collectors.

A small to medium sized tree with showy reticulated leaves. The term reticulated relates to the visibility of the veins in the leaves. New growth shows rose-pink tint on light green-yellow leaves. Summer color is light green with the leaves deeply cut almost lacey looking leaves.  As with other variegated maples,  some shade in hot afternoon sun is necessary. A small to medium sized tree with a height of  5' in 10 years. Maximum height is 8' tall and about 4' across with a slightly pendulous habit. A collector's must and one of our favorites. Once established hardy to USDA zone 6.

      Acer palmatum 'Trompenburg'

Photo of Trompenburg leaves in greenhouse - not as red as it would be in full sun.

A beautiful, hard to find red palmatum with its own unique characteristics. The leaves curl slightly which gives an unusual look to the entire tree. This cultivar does not have a large head, but is more open and ornamental in nature. Spring growth is dark red-purple. In summer the burgundy color holds well even in the hottest sun. This is a slow growing cultivar destined to reach only 15' in an many years. Fall color is crimson. A maple for maple collectors. Some pruning may be necessary for shipment. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.

The photo taken June 2010 is from our display garden showing the wonderful color variegations during the summer.

         Acer palmatum 'Ukigumo'

Got to be one of my top 5 favorites [Sam]. The first photo shows the wonderful variegation - green, white and pink. The second photo shows the structure of Ukigumo, and why it is called the   'floating cloud' maple.

A small to medium sized tree, Ukigumo in Japanese means 'Floating Cloud Tree'.  The new growth is variegated with white and green leaves mixed with pink. The growth habit is spreading with layers that Japanese translate to clouds. One of the finest maples in the variegated group and one of the favorites at the nursery. Both pictures are from a specimen that was planted 10 years ago at the entrance to the nursery. The dramatic effect of this tree captures the attention of every visitor to our nursery. In the fall the entire tree turns pink before changing to the final red color for the season. Recommended sun exposure is in the morning with some shade protection in the hot afternoon sun. Estimated height in 10 years is 10' and a width nearly 8'. Ukigumo like other Japanese maples benefits from some pruning to shape the tree, as well as removing any dead branches. A must for a Japanese Maple collector with a shady place. Once established hardy to USDA zone 6.

Acer palmatum 'Villa Taranto'

The first photo shows the string-like leaves of this cultivar. The second photo is Villa Taranto in our display garden with new spring color in full sun.

Villa Taranto is the red and cream variegated version of Koto no ito. New leaves are fatter and with each passing year the leaves from the same leaf node become skinnier until they are like thin strings. This is not a large maple only reaching 6' to 7' feet at maturity. A nice addition to a small garden or grown in a patio container. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.
