Lace Leaf Maples

  Acer palmatum dissectum 'Hana matoi'

The photo [May 2011] is a Hana matoi specimen in my display garden - magnificent isn't it!

Hana matoi is a very rare variegated lace leaf weeping maple with very fine leaves. Strong pink, cream and green leaves are more definite than those of  Toyama nishiki which may be its parent. The incredible pink color is also visible in the cascading branches. Hana matoi. needs to be staked for height to look its best. It is a vigorous grower for such a spectacular and showy maple. This maple can reach at least 4' tall with staking. Morning sun with afternoon shade is recommended. A wonderful addition to a home garden or patio container. This rare and hard to find maple is hardy to USDA zone 6 once established. A collector's must. Photo courtesy of Buchholz and Buchholz Nursery.

  Acer palmatum dissectum 'Chantilly Lace'

Photo taken May 2010 of a 3 gallon 'Chantilly Lace' - one of my favorite [Sam] lace leaf maples.

Chantilly Lace is a rare variegated lace leaf weeping maple with very fine leaves. Very similar to Baldsmith in texture the color variegation is more subtle. Soft and lacey looking, Chantilly Lace is the perfect maple for a waterfall or pond setting.  As a wonderful addition to a home garden or landscape, this maple prefers morning sun and some protection from hot afternoon sun. Fall color is brilliant crimson. This often hard to find maple may reach 4' in 10 years. It is a moderate grower and needs some pruning to enhance the structure of the tree. Once established hardy to USDA zone 6.

   Acer palmatum dissectum 'Crimson Queen'

A well known and often planted red lace leaf weeping maple. Crimson Queen has strong red pink new growth turning to dark burgundy in the summer. This dissectum originated in the US and is a strong growing cultivar. Fall colors range from orange to bright scarlet tones. This strong cultivar is not tender and can handle the hot summers and cold winters with added protection in zones 4 and 5. If you are getting just one laceleaf maple then Crimson Queen is one you cannot go wrong with. Height in 10 years may reach 5' high and wide. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.

   Acer palmatum dissectum 'Dr. Brown

An unusual reddish-brown laceleaf weeping maple that handles full sun. The strong red-pink new grow turns to well named red-brown color in the summer and then evolves into a fire-engine red in the fall. This cultivar is relatively new and not found in retail nurseries. A moderate growing cultivar can reach 4' high and wide in 10 years. Good accent maple for a Japanese style garden or water feature. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.

   Acer palmatum dissectum 'Filigree'

This cultivar is not widely found in the plant trade even though J .D Vertrees says that it is probably his favorite among the variegated dissectums and smaller weepers. Filigree as the name implies is a feathery lace-leaf maple in the variegated category. One of the smallest of the dissectum group. Filigree  requires shade in the afternoon to prevent the fine green-white lace leaves from burning in the hot sun. Ideal for a small garden or water feature because it is slow growing. This rare and unusual maple is a good selection for either bonsai, a patio container or a focal point in a small garden. Once established hardy to USDA zone 6.

Fall colors blend from yellow to gold.

Acer palmatum dissectum 'Orangeola'

Photo on the right show magnificent fall color.

One of the most outstanding lace-leaf weepers to be introduced 20 years ago. Spring color is bright orange-red. Orangeola is a vigorous grower, but is still considered a smaller lace-leaf than some reds, including Inaba Shidare. A medium sized weeper with wonderful color throughout the growing season. The new growth ranges in color from orange to red.  Summer color tones are bold from orange to green.   Then in late summer another flush of new growth shows more red orange with finally an orange finish in fall. Recommended sun exposure is mostly sun. This variety can take hot afternoon sun with adequate moisture. Estimated height in 10 years is 5' tall and wide. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5

      Acer palmatum dissectum 'Red Dragon'

Red Dragon maple in the landscape.

Red Dragon has to be one of our favorite red laceleaf weeping maples.  The 3rd addition of  Japanese Maples  by J.D. Vertrees states that Red Dragon is the best maple for holding its red color through the summer and "may well prove to be the standard in the future." (P. 196)

New growth is bright red changing to maroon-red in the summer. Fall color is flaming scarlet. The growth habit is compact and shows a well-branched cascading mound. Great for a Japanese garden design, to accent a water feature or for a patio container. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.

            Acer palmatum dissectum 'Seiryu'

Photo shows the wonderful green lacey look of this upright cultivar.

This cultivar is in the dissectum group, but it is an upright tree and not a weeping maple. Seiryu is one of a few laceleaf upright trees.  This often hard to find maple may reach 10' or 11' at maturity. The structure of the tree and the feathery leaves allow filtered sunlight to show through. Seiryu can handle full sun to mostly shade. When flowers appear they turn into red samaras. Fall color is also crimson. Once established this cultivar is hardy to USDA zone 6.

Acer palmatum dissectum 'Tamukeyama'

First photo shows dark red summer color and photo on right shows bright crimson fall color.

Tamukeyama is one of the oldest known lace leaf weeping maples dating back to 1710. Spring color is bright crimson red turning to a strong burgundy in the summer before it shines with its scarlet red fall color. Tamukeyama  holds it color better than most other red laceleaf maples even in high heat and humidity so it is recommended for East coast and Southern climate zones. Staking is advisable to get the canopy appearance desired for most laceleaf maples. This cultivar can reach 6' tall and wide in 10 years. An excellent maple for a water feature or Japanese style garden. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.
