         Acer shirasawanum '6910 Holland'

This is a relatively  new cultivar from - you guessed it - Holland. This is a relatively fast growing cultivar than can reach 7' in 6 years. Similar in leaf shape to Aureum, this cultivar shows golden yellow new growth turning to more of a green gold color in the summer turning to pumpkin orange in the fall.

Acer shirasawanum 'Aureum'

The photo on the left is the Aureum in our display garden and on the right is the same maple showing fall color.

The common name for this cultivar is 'Golden Full Moon Maple' an older cultivar in the same genus as the Autumn Moon Maple [Acer shirasawanum Autumn Moon]

A small to medium sized tree with wonderful color throughout the growing season. The new growth is an exquisite lime green. Summer color is a golden lime green with a tinge of red along the edges of each leaf. The Golden Full Moon Maple is a most spectacular tree. Recommended sun exposure is in the morning with some shade protection in the hot afternoon sun. Fall colors are some of the best for any Japanese Maple ranging from gold to orange to red often on each individual leaf.

This cultivar is highly desired for a smaller partial shade garden. Placement in either a Northern or Eastern location would be best. It is an extremely slow grower which may reach 8' in 15 years.

                    Acer shirasawanum 'Autumn Moon'

This  photo shows summer color as grown in our display garden. Another of my [Sam] favorites.

Selected by J. D. Vertrees in the 1970's this hard to find cultivar in the same genus as the Golden Full Moon Maple [Acer shirasawanum Aureum]. A small to medium sized tree with wonderful color throughout the growing season. The new growth ranges in color from yellow to dark orange. Summer color tones similarly are shades of lemon green, gold, salmon and orange. Recommended sun exposure is in the morning with some shade protection in the hot afternoon sun. Fall colors mirror the spring and summer look with all the leaves darker in color from gold to red. A must for a Japanese Maple collector.

     Acer shirasawanum 'Red Dawn

Red Dawn is a new shirasawanum cultivar from Talon Buchholz in Gaston, Oregon. As the name implies this is a red leaf shirasawanum cultivar. Lovely shape and growth habit not too big. Height in 10 years 8' with a 4' spread. Red leaves in the spring hold through the summer. The fall display is florescent red crimson, a real eye-catcher. This cultivar can handle full sun to partial shade and is a perfect maple for a small garden or patio container. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.

Acer shirasawanum 'Kawaii'

The first photo is courtesy of Talon Buchholz and it shows the outstanding fall color. The second photo is the Kawaii in our display garden during summer.

Kawaii is a slow growing lace leaf cultivar that can reach 4'  in 10 years. New growth is pale pink red turning to a darker red color with green in the summer months. Words cannot describe the unusual beauty of this rare cultivar, but in Japanese the name means 'cute' and that is absolutely correct. Growth habit is compact for a lace leaf and it is often grafted on a high standard to give it some height which we think adds to the overall appearance. Wonderful addition to a small garden or for a patio container. Fall color is orange to crimson. Truly a collector's must.

The photo was taken May 2010 of a Sensu in my display garden.

    Acer shirasawanum 'Sensu'

Sensu is another new cultivar introduced by Talon Buchholz with Buchholz and Buchholz Nursery in Gaston, Oregon. The name Sensu is Japanese for 'moving fan.' New growth is variegated from light green to gold. Summer color is green, gold and orange changing to pumpkin orange in the fall. Sensu gracefully grows to an upright tree of about 7-8'. Overall the maple has a narrow growth habit that makes it perfect for a small space. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.
